A young boy with a love for books, constantly finds himself in trouble for stealing them. Shortly after the death of his parents, Hallelujah and his younger sister LILA (7) move in with his uncles CHETTY (40’s) and PAPER (40’s), who struggle to understand his unique connection to literature. After Hallelujah discovers that his parents’ books were sold to pay for their funeral expenses, he finds that a rare first edition of Black Boy by Richard Wright, a book his father often read to him, is being auctioned at a gala by a man referred to as THE FANCY MAN (50s). Of course, Hallelujah plots to steal it back. After stealing a book from the local bookstore, Hallelujah meets its wise owner, MRS. WATERS, whom he learns is responsible for selling his parents books in the first place. With a shared love for literature and an understanding of Hallelujah’s motives, Mrs. Waters agrees to help Hallelujah retrieve his parents’ book. Throughout the film, Hallelujah hears the voices of his deceased parents, who act as a guide on his journey to retrieve what rightfully belongs to him. Hallelujah’s friends - G MOM, WHITE BOY, BLUE, BABY NIQUE - and reluctantly, his uncles - will all lend a hand in the incredible heist. As often happens with Hallelujah, however, his own recitation of lines from classic literature will serve as both his most clear way of communicating, and in the film’s final climactic scenes, his salvation.
